To begin with, there is a wide variety of sauces that you can use in many greek foods, such as souvlaki. Although one of them is very special, the tzatziki. It does not consist of many ingredients and is very easy to make at home. It is exceptionally accompanied with pork or chicken. Many locals and tourists get crazy for this sauce, because the second category has not tasted that dip again. The majority of the waiters suggest it to the tourists so as to taste something different as well as delicious. Especially, when the tourists ask them what is the ideal sauce for the souvlaki. Once you eat it with tzatziki, you will not want to try it with anything else later.
It is high time to show you an easy recipe for homemade tzatziki!
What is Tzatziki?
Tzatziki is a creamy sauce with cucumber and the chefs make it with simple ingredients, such as Greek yoghurt, cucumber and garlic. Also, it is beneficial for you to add fresh herbs e.g dill or mint. The classic way is the use of strained sheep or goat’s milk yoghurt, though full-fat yoghurt suits.
This sauce is very easy to make and it takes less than 20 minutes. First of all, you begin with grated cucumbers and then you have to drain them. In the end, you blend all the ingredients. Furthermore, tzatziki is spicy and has the smell and taste of garlic. Once you try it, you will constantly accompany your meals with this dip. Basically, it is an ideal option for mezze!
Ingredients
- Cucumber
- Salt
- 4-5 minced garlic cloves
- 1 tsp of white vinegar
- Extra virgin olive oil
- 2 cups of full-fat or reduced fat Greek yoghurt. Remember that it has to be strained yoghurt.
- Pepper (either ground white or black)
- Chopped fresh dill or mint
Execution
Firstly, you must grate the cucumbers. An ideal solution is the use of a food processor. Put inside the sliced cucumbers with a pinch of salt. Secondly, the most essential part is the drain of cucumbers. Basically, there has to be no liquid left. Thirdly, blend the minced garlic with the vinegar and a small quantity of olive oil in a large bowl. Then, insert the cucumber, yoghurt, salt, pepper and herbs and stir very well. Fourthly, the mixture has to be cold. Subsequently, put it into the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
To sum up, that was an easy recipe for an exceptional sauce and can suit many dishes in the Mediterranean cuisine. It can be used as a dip as well. But the most preferable choice is the combination of pork and chicken with tzatziki. I highly recommend you to plan a family dinner and make this dip.
